Same Difference in Belfast city centre for the Christmas lights switch-on.

X Factor finalists Same Difference wowed the crowds in Belfast last night as they joined Santa for the big city centre Christmas lights switch-on.

Pop duo Sean and Sarah Smith were joined by cartoon favourite Scooby Doo, Hollyoaks actor Gerard McCarthy and Olympic medallists cyclist Wendy Houvenaghel and boxer Paddy Barnes for the star-studded occasion at City Hall.

Thousands braved the nippy weather for the festive fun, as Lord Mayor Tom Hartley flipped the switch to light up the streets.

The hugely popular Christmas Continental Market now returns to Belfast City Hall from today until Saturday 20 December.

Once again the grounds of Belfast City Hall will come alive with dozens of market stalls offering a stunning range of crafts, food and decorations from across Europe and beyond.

Children will have the chance to visit Santa in his grotto, with the proceeds going to the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign.

There’s also a new Christmas carousel, face painter and the opportunity to send a letter to Santa at his post box.

Why didnt the council get eoghan to switch on the lights with gerard etc talent from our own country

What about a return to traditional entertainment acts performing this service instead of "here today, gone tomorrow" goons? Surely family favourites The Krankies would be available for half the price?

Gritty, moving and heroic...Billy plays captured life here

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times ... Sunday's 30th anniversary screening of the seminal Too Late to Talk to Billy was riveting viewing. But it wasn't nostalgic viewing.

Parties need better defence in Stormont's game of two halves

Surprise, surprise. Peter Robinson has been to his first gaelic match, Martin McGuinness is heading for Windsor Park and the Ulster Unionists have scored another own goal.

Why trying to go on a diet is never really a piece of cake

Some people make New Year’s resolutions, I make lists. Every new year I determine to keep track of everything I spend and everything I eat and drink.

Scary movie? Their jaws were sore from laughing

Teenage boys love horror films and I have two who are in charge of the remote control in our house, so naturally there’s gore-a-plenty on the box most weekends. However, until recently one film was banned.
