Heather McCartney broke down on live television this morning as she launched a scathing attack on the media and claimed she even considered killing herself.

The tearful former model, who is going through a very bitter public divorce with Sir Paul McCartney, lost control of her emotions during the live GMTV interview and blamed the tabloid press for orchestrating a "hate campaign" against her.

She also compared the media's treatment of her to that of Kate McCann and Princess Diana, and said she had received death threats and felt like she was "living in a prison".

"They [journalists] follow me persistently and some of them have got no licences," she said.

"I live in a prison. I have to fight back otherwise I will go insane."

Visibly angry, she told presenter Fiona Phillips she was taking her fight to the European Commission because she felt there needed to be "responsible journalism" when it came to celebrities.

She also issued a warning to those who, she claimed, had recently threatened her.

"I have a box of evidence which will go to a certain person should anything happen to me and should you top me off, it will still go to that person and the truth will come out," she said. "There is such a fear from a certain party that the truth will come out about lots of things that have been done."

She also blamed the press for the recent threat saying they created a " hate campaign" against her.

"So the police came round and said to me that I have a serious death threat against me from a certain underground movement," she said. "I said to them are you joking and they said they had this 999 call from me. And what do the press do. The press write Heather cries wolf to police - they came to me.

" It's disgusting that I am put through this. And who created this death threat? The media created it, a certain part of the tabloid media created such a hatred campaign against me that they put my life and my daughter's life at risk and that is why I considered killing myself because I thought if I am dead then she could be with her father. It's the truth, I am sick of it."

She became tearful as she said: "They make up such lies. They've called me a whore, a golddigger, a fantasist, a liar, the most unbelievably hurtful things, and I've stayed quiet for my daughter.

"But my daughter . . . we've had death threats, I've been close to suicide. I'm so upset about this . . . I've had worse press than a paedophile or a murderer and I've done nothing but charity for 20 years."

She refuted suggestions that she has "used the press", answering: " I haven't used the press for anything but my charity."
