Teen quizzed over murder released

A 15-year-old boy who was being questioned by police investigating the murder of a Co Tyrone pensioner has been released on bail.

Grandfather Francis O’Neill (78), a former psychiatric nurse, was discovered dead at his home at Brook Valley in Omagh last Saturday morning.

Detectives arrested the youth in Belfast on Monday and were granted an extension to continue questioning him on Wednesday. However, he was freed from custody yesterday afternoon pending further police inquiries.

On Wednesday a 16-year-old was remanded in custody charged with the pensioner’s murder.

The youth, who cannot be identified because of his age, is due to reappear before Omagh Youth Court on Tuesday.

During the hearing a detective inspector revealed that police still had to speak to 10 potential witnesses in connection with the murder inquiry.

A 20-year-old male who was arrested on suspicion of murder last Sunday has since been released without charge.

Mr O’Neill’s body was discovered after police were called to a reported break-in at his home around 1.30am last Saturday. Detectives launched a murder inquiry following the results of a post-mortem.

Details of Mr O’Neill’s funeral arrangements have not yet been released.
