Teenager killed in Newry road accident
Saturday, 25 July 2009
A pedestrian was killed today when he was hit by a car.
The accident happened at around 3.20am on the Warrenpoint Road in Newry, Co Down.
Police named the victim as 18-year-old Stephen Markey, who was from the Warrenpoint area.
The stretch of road will remain closed as crash investigators examine the scene.
The PSNI have appealed for anyone who travelled along the road around the time of the crash to come forward.
The SDLP's PJ Bradley urged all motorists to the care on the roads.
The South Down MLA also expressed his sympathy to the family of the dead teenager.
"This appears to a really tragic incident which has seen a young man lose his life at such an early age," said Mr Bradley.
"My sympathies go out to his family at this particularly distressing time. I know Stephen's parents and grandparents and they are no doubt distraught at the minute.
"I would like to urge all motorists to take the utmost care on our roads at all times.
"And it is vitally important that pedestrians remain vigilant and safe while walking along busy routes at whatever time of the day or night."

May I just second James' comments and reiterate the need for caution on our roads. I was the driver in a single vehicle RTA 3 weeks ago now. I'm so lucky to be alive. I thank the heavens that my error hurt me and no-one else. I will never walk properly again, but at least I am alive. Such tragedy in the lives of so many, caused by the actions of so few. Please, I appeal to all of you motorists out there: You are not the best driver in the world. Accidents happen, and when it happens to you then you will know pain and suffering. Learn from the statistics out there, and stories such as this one. No-one is immortal, and no-one is immune. My heart goes out to Steven's family. I know there is nothing I can do for you, but I do feel a sense of loss for you. Please take care everyone. Life is too short to take risks out there.

I rely on my computer to read The Telegraph as I spend most abroad and I am shocked by the number of fatal road traffic accidents that are reported and so many of them involving young people. This morning I'm reading about the death of an 18 year old man and yesterday morning about the death of a 17 year old girl. Events such as these bring such misery. Everybody needs to take more care.
