Temperatures to plummet as big freeze engulfs Ulster
Saturday, 19 December 2009
Temperatures throughout Northern Ireland are expected to fall rapidly over the weekend as forecasters warn of a big freeze.
Although Northern Ireland will likely escape the volume of snow which has blanketed parts of England, the Met Office have warned to expect at least a light covering of snow or sleet and temperatures well below zero.
Today there will be isolated wintry showers and clear sunny spells with more persistent sleet and snow towards the north coast.
Tomorrow will have the most snow with frequent and heavy showers throughout Northern Ireland.
Temperatures are expected to drop to as low as minus three or minus four degrees at night.
Forecaster Pat Boyle said: “I think the main feature for Northern Ireland over the next few days is that it is going to be very cold. There will be sleety showers on Saturday and widespread snow on Sunday with temperatures at two or three degrees during the day.”
Odds on a white Christmas have been slashed to 3/1 as forecasters predict Ireland will have its first white Christmas since 2004. To qualify for a white Christmas, 1mm of snow must be recorded as falling between midnight and 11.59pm on December 25 at the official weather station at Belfast International Airport.
