Tesco sparks a fuel price war with 3p cut
Friday, 10 October 2008
Northern Ireland motorists were today poised to reap the benefits of a fuel price war after a leading retailer slashed 3p off petrol and diesel.
The news comes after supermarket giant Tesco said it was cutting fuel costs at all its 430 UK forecourts, including all 12 filling stations here.
However, it does not change the fact that Tesco’s regional pricing policy means it charges five different prices for petrol and diesel across the province.
The move follows a penny cut by rival Asda at the start of this week, and price drops made by a host of retailers last month, as oil prices plummeted to their lowest level in a year.
Petrol now costs 9% less than the July 17 high of 119.9p, with diesel nearly 10% cheaper.
AA spokesman Luke Bosdet said: “It's good to see that somebody other than Morrisons and Asda is taking the lead in dropping prices.
“Obviously we will be keeping watch to see whether we have got some towns where petrol is 3p cheaper now.”

How can a 3p reduction be described as slashing prices. Oil prices have dropped from $147 per barrel to approx $78 per barrel, an almost 50% reduction. By my reckoning petrol should be about 70p per litre (do not believe the tripe about production and exploration costs). However no matter what the price, the oil companies (THIEVES) will still make billions, although at the minute they are totally ripping us off rather than just ripping us off. Another point to bear in mind is the millions/billions that the government (THIEVES) have made in extra duty - money that they have just given to banks - money that will be given back to us by way of a bank loan, overdraft or mortgage, thereby allowing the banks(THIEVES) to profit from OUR money to get them back in the black.

They still wont compete with Go service station in cookstown. Before this annocment Petrol was £1.03 and Diesel £114.9. No doubt they will cut their prices again and will still be that one step ahead

I am looking forward to NIE and NIR cutting their prices. Both these companies were remarkably alert to the rise in fuel costs and particularly efficient when it came to passing those increased prices on to the consumers.
Now that fuel prices have fallen, are these companies going to pass on the savings or reap in the extra profit?

Its great to see Tesco's grasp the nettle of over-priced petrol, but they also need to address the difference in price that they charge for petrol between their stations, eg Yorkgate and Abbeycentre prices are usually different
