The photograph voted the winning wonder of Ireland
Wednesday, 19 August 2009
An amateur snapper from Co Down fought off thousands of competitors to win a tourist photography competition, it was announced yesterday.
Ryan Wilson impressed the judges with his entry entitled Into the West to take home first prize in the Wonders of Ireland contest.
The winning picture features Tyrella beach near Downpatrick against the stunning backdrop of the Mourne Mountains, with a horse and rider in silhouette.
The photo also shows a dramatic sky with heavy clouds and sun bursting through, which was described as “typically Irish”.
Irish and visiting tourists submitted thousands of photo entries, with 56% of images coming from visitors.
The 11 runner-up photographs were the work of Belgian, Dutch, Spanish, UK, German and Irish tourists.
The announcement was made by Gulliver Ireland at the launch of the GoIreland.com Photography Awards 2009 yesterday.
Held in association with John Hinde Ireland, the GoIreland.com Photography Awards is an international amateur tourist photography competition that highlights Ireland and its tourism qualities using a different theme each year.

My schoolfriends and I often cycled from Downpatrick to Tyrella in summer during WWII to swim and 'sun-bathe'. The beach was planted with large wooden stakes to prevent enemy aircraft landing and there were strategically positioned machine-gun nests in the dunes.
Despite all this we enjoyed the beautiful beach and the marvellous view of the Mourne Mountains.
The winning photo certainly evoked many happy youthful memories.

Well done Ryan - fantastic photo.
Artists like you do more for our county than people give you credit for - you have the skills to show the world just how beautiful Ireland really is.
Really well done!

I just wish all those who actually live in Northern Ireland felt the same way as Robbie C. We live in a country of beauty and yet there are still some people hellbent on destroying it either by terrorism or way down the other scale - building endless apartment blocks.

I can imagine that it had to be very difficult to choose a best photo. When we toured your coast in April we were presented with a beautiful photo moment everywhere we went and I took advantage to the tune of about 500 photos.
