The Twelfth: Woman killed at parade
Tuesday, 14 July 2009
The death of a 30-year-old woman during the final hours of Twelfth celebrations in Co Down has left members of the Orange Order “deeply shocked and stunned”.
The woman, named locally as Deborah Jordan who was from the Saintfield area, died after she was struck by a vehicle in Killyleagh as the parade made its way from the field.
Ms Jordan was playing with the Cahard Flute Band when the incident happened. The car was also part of the procession. A nine-year-old boy was also injured.
It is understood both victims were airlifted to hospital by a police helicopter.
Ms Jordan, who is understood to have been a postal worker, was taken to hospital in Belfast, where she later died. The young boy is receiving treatment for an injury to one of his legs in the Ulster Hospital.
Mervyn Gibson from the Orange Order said her death has left the community “in shock”.
“I have spoken with the Grand Master and the County Master who are both devastated by the terrible events. We will be offering our support .”
\[Brian Pelan\]to the families over the next few days. It is just a terrible shock.
“It appears that it was a tragic accident.”
DUP councillor for the Killyleagh area William Walker said: “This news has just left people shocked. The day had gone perfectly and just turned to tragedy.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the woman’s family. It really is very sad. The news has stunned so many people here.”
William Dick, chairman of Down District Council, said: “She was from a very respected family within the community and there is a terrible sense of shock,” he said.

What makes me SICK is members of the press turning up at the houses of the families of those involved, intruding on families trying to come to terms with the loss, and injury of loved ones, pretending they care, preying on very emotional & vulnerable people.
No consideration.
