Thousands log on to see farmers' pay

It appears people in the Republic simply couldn't resist looking up what the farmers in their neighbourhood might be receiving in payments from the EU.

People logged onto the Department of Agriculture's website in their droves when the details of tens of thousands of payments from the EU were published on the internet for the first time.

After the details of three schemes under the Common Agricultural Policy were revealed, around 5,000 people logged on between 7pm and midnight on Tuesday.

The department revealed a further 14,000 people checked out the site on Wednesday.

The details included the names, county and amounts received by more than 100,000 farmers under the disadvantaged areas scheme and the 55,000 in the rural environment protection scheme and the early retirement scheme.
