A MAN who punched his partner in the face while she was holding their 16-month-old child has been put on probation for three years.
James Hancock from Bleach Green, Belfast, was sentenced at Belfast Magistrates Court yesterday. The 32-year-old, who was the subject of a suspended sentence when he committed the offence on Boxing Day last year, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault after handing himself into police.
The court was told his victim suffered cuts and bruising to her head.
A defence solicitor told the court his client accepted that there was “no justification” for his behaviour and said he was “full of remorse”. It is understood Hancock’s victim withdrew her statement.
The solicitor indicated that the couple were still living together. He said Social Services had been contacted on a number of occasions but had not expressed any concerns about the child’s safety.
The District Judge Fiona Bagnall gave the defendant credit for his early plea but warned: “Any circumstances where somebody hits someone when holding a child in their arms would have to realise there is a risk to the child.”
