Traffic disrupted after gas explosion at house

Traffic disruption on the main Londonderry to Letterkenny road continued until late yesterday following a gas explosion and fire at a garage at Castleforward near Newtowncunningham in Co Donegal on Wednesday night.

An exclusion zone around the premises also remained in place and the occupants of three nearby houses were evacuated until the fire crew made safe three other containers of ecylene gas.

Chief Fire Officer at Letterkenny Fire Station Bob McMenamin explained that the precautions taken were necessary as ecylene is a very unstable gas.

He said: “There was a real danger that any or all of the three remaining gas cylinders could explode which would have obvious consequences as this particular type of gas remains unstable for 24 hours which was why is was necessary for us to cordoned of the area and remain at the garage hosing down the cylinders.”

It is understood the garage where the fire broke out on Wednesday was detached from a nearby family home was used as a welding business.

The fire service evacuated this family home and two other neighbouring houses.
