Tributes at Titanic memorial

Monday, 30 November 2009

Belfast Titanic Society has marked the 50th anniversary of the relocation of the Titanic Memorial into the grounds of the City Hall.

In November 1959 the process was begun to relocate the memorial from Donegall Square North. After 39 years its position in the middle of the road had become a traffic hazard.

Society chairman Una Reilly said: “Descendants of those whose names are inscribed on the Titanic Memorial came together along with Titanic Society members and Belfast city councillors to mark this date. Many people are unaware of the Titanic Memorial’s location in Belfast and we feel we should draw attention to its presence in the city.”

Are we the only country in the world that has memorials and areas of the city dedicated to something that was built there, and then ultimately led to a disaster?? By no stretch of the imagination am I indicating any sort of faulty workmanship leading to the tragedy, but I do fail to see why we continue to harp on about Titanic when the harsh reality is, it sank on 1st journey. Would the money not be better spent on other areas of society? Why are we forever looking back - its time to move forward.

Gritty, moving and heroic...Billy plays captured life here

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times ... Sunday's 30th anniversary screening of the seminal Too Late to Talk to Billy was riveting viewing. But it wasn't nostalgic viewing.

Parties need better defence in Stormont's game of two halves

Surprise, surprise. Peter Robinson has been to his first gaelic match, Martin McGuinness is heading for Windsor Park and the Ulster Unionists have scored another own goal.

Why trying to go on a diet is never really a piece of cake

Some people make New Year’s resolutions, I make lists. Every new year I determine to keep track of everything I spend and everything I eat and drink.

Scary movie? Their jaws were sore from laughing

Teenage boys love horror films and I have two who are in charge of the remote control in our house, so naturally there’s gore-a-plenty on the box most weekends. However, until recently one film was banned.
