Tributes paid to victims RAF jet crash
Saturday, 4 July 2009
Tributes have been paid to an RAF pilot and navigator who died when their Tornado jet crashed into a Scottish hillside.
Flight Lieutenant Kenneth Thompson and Flight Lieutenant Nigel Morton, of 43 Squadron at RAF Leuchars, Fife, were killed in the crash in Argyll on Thursday.
“Their deaths are a huge loss to the Squadron and the Tornado F3 Force as a whole,” Wing Commander David Hazell, the squadron’s commanding officer, said yesterday.
“However, it is nothing compared to that suffered by their families. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this dreadful time.”
A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: “At the moment our thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends and colleagues of the two aircrew who lost their lives.
“The crash is being investigated at the moment. There will be a service inquiry held by the RAF.”
