Two men stabbed, another bottled in violent weekend

Three men were hospitalised at the weekend after two were stabbed and one was attacked with a broken bottle.

A 26-year old man remained in a stable condition in hospital last night after he was stabbed several times during an incident in the Shantallow area of Londonderry in the early hours of yesterday morning.

A 23-year-old man is expected to appear in Londonderry Magistrates Court this morning to be charged with attempted murder.

Three men arrested following a knife attack in Portadown early on Sunday morning remain in police custody.

And a man has been treated for facial injuries after he was attacked with a broken bottle in a pub in Antrim.

Local councillor Mary Bradley said the people of Shantallow didn’t deserve such incidents.

The SDLP woman said: “First and foremost, my thoughts are with this young man who was stabbed at the weekend. I hope he makes a full recovery from his ordeal.

“This incident once again reminds us of the terrible knife culture which is something that gives me great concern and something our communities don’t want.

“The people of Shantallow don’t want to live their lives with this type of threat in their midst.

“I would ask anyone who has any information on what happened, even if it is only a small piece of information, to let the PSNI know so they can try and get some justice.”

A second man sustained stab wounds after he was attacked in the Thomas Street area of Portadown at around 2am yesterday.

The 23-year old victim was stabbed in the neck as he went to the assistance of a friend involved in an altercation.

The injured man was taken to hospital where he was treated for a non life-threatening injury.

Police arrested three men aged 27, 28 and 34.

All three remained in police custody last night.

Information is also being sought after a man was hit in the face with a broken bottle.

The attack occurred some time between 10.30pm and 11.30pm on Saturday and resulted in the 24-year old victim being taken to hospital where he received stitches to facial wounds.

A PSNI spokeswoman said: “Anyone who was in the premises and who witnessed the assault is asked to contact police in Antrim on 0845 600 8000.”

As well as contacting police, information on any of the weekend assaults can be passed on anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
