U2 confirmed as one of top five acts of all time

Monday, 9 March 2009

U2's latest chart success confirms them as one of the all-time top five acts in the UK, according to the Official Charts Company.

Their new album, No Line On The Horizon, went straight to the top of the charts yesterday - becoming the Irish band's tenth number one album in their 29-year recording career.

It outsold the rest of the top five combined and is the fastest-selling album of the year so far.

HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo said: "Sales of No Line On The Horizon have exceeded our already high expectations, and the album has sold exceptionally well on all its formats and across all channels - in store, online and via downloads.

"U2 are one of the very few bands who can reach beyond their core fanbase to connect with a much wider audience - both through their music and their personality, and their achievement in matching the Rolling Stones' record of 10 number one UK albums reaffirms their iconic status as the world's biggest Rock group."

No Line On The Horizon knocked The Prodigy's Invaders Must Die, which itself went straight to number one last week, off the top spot.

Kings of Leon's Only By The Night dropped one place to number three, while Lady Gaga's The Fame climbed one to four.

Lily Allen dropped two places to number five with It's Not Me, It's You.

In the singles chart, Flo Rida featuring Kesha went straight in at number one with Right Round.

They beat The Saturdays to the top with the girl group's cover of the Depeche Mode hit Just Can't Get Enough going straight in at number two.

The single has been released to raise money for this year's Comic Relief appeal.

Lady Gaga stayed at number three with Poker Face, while Kelly Clarkson dropped three places to number four with My Life Would Suck Without You.

Beatles, Michael Jackson, Elvis, Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin. Who would you take out to put U2 in. Load of nonsence.

This is meaningless. How do you measure how good a band is ? These kind of statistics are for sport, not art. I'm sure Celine Dion has sold millions of albums and is "one of the top acts of all time". But she's God-awful. Some would say the same about U2 (though not me, Bono is in fact God). These figures don't mean a thing.

this will do wonders for Bono's head! It's nearly as big as his bank balance.
