Ailing Rangers 'attracts interest'

Rangers' administrators said they have received "several expressions of interest from parties not connected to the club" since taking over the running of the business.

Paul Clark, of administrators Duff and Phelps, made the announcement during a press conference at the club's Ibrox stadium. The Glasgow-based club appointed Duff and Phelps after a petition was lodged by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) at the Court of Session in Edinburgh to have one appointed for them.

Rangers FC was forced into administration over an unpaid tax bill of £9 million accrued since Craig Whyte's takeover last May. Mr Clark said that interest in the cash-strapped club will be given due consideration.

The administrators also said they have been unable to locate £24 million which was lent to the club by Ticketus.

Joint administrator David Whitehouse said: "Our understanding is that the funds from Ticketus didn't come through the company's account, they went through a parent company account so we haven't got visibility on that. Ticketus don't have security on the assets of the club."

Former Rangers chairman Alastair Johnston wants the takeover of the club last May to be investigated, telling the BBC: "I have today written to the Crown office asking for an investigation into the background surrounding the acquisition of Rangers Football Club by Craig Whyte, and in particular whether there is evidence of fraud."

A Strathclyde Police spokesman said: "We can confirm that we have been passed information regarding the ongoing situation at Rangers Football Club."

Rangers has been handed an automatic 10-point deduction by the Scottish Premier League (SPL) because of the administration move. The club, which has fallen 14 points behind SPL leaders Celtic as a result of the decision, is also awaiting the verdict of a tax tribunal which could cost it £75 million.

Mr Clark said he had spoken to Rangers boss Ally McCoist and the players but was unable to confirm if any club staff, including the players, would be made redundant.

"As a result of our preliminary assessment we are wholly confident that Rangers will continue as a football club. We do not think that liquidation and the closure of the club is a likely outcome at all."
