Benefit cheat lottery winner raped teenager

The lottery winner revealed as being a benefit cheat is also a convicted rapist, the Daily Mail has reported.

Edward Putman, 46 scooped a £4.5million lottery win back in 2009 but declined publicity at the time, but when he was revealed as claiming benefits after the jackpot, his criminal record was also unveiled.

Yesterday it emerged that he received a seven year jail term after being convicted in 1993 of raping a 17-year-old girl in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire a year earlier, and his victim will now have the right to sue for damages for the violent crime.

Former bricklayer Putman, only served four years of his sentence, had tried to intimidate his victim’s key witness before his trial and was also guilty of wounding with intent in a case from the mid-1980s.
