British Olympians told to wear glitzy gold jacket... or else!

Although it may seem a little presumptuous for UK athletes to be decked out in gold at the Olympics, it has been confirmed that they will be dressed in that very hue when they troop into the stadium next month for the opening ceremony.

The new 'gold accent' jacket - supplied by high street retailer Next - will be part of the Team GB uniform that is to be worn by the 550 athleles at all times.

Those who do not stick to the "One Team GB" rules - advocated by Sir Clive Woodward in an introductory film - will face a severe telling off. Team members not on message - in particular athletes wearing rival labels to official sponsors - may be referred to a disciplinary panel.

Andy Hunt, the British Olympic Association's chef de mission said he thought the athletes will be happy to go along with the outfit choices: "They're really proud to receive the kit.

There will be a sense of shared responsibility to look the part," he told The Times. However, one source said that the jacket in question "looked like something out of an Elvis tribute band... It's definitely going to stand out".
