A former wheelclamper is to go on trial next May for the murder of schoolgirl Milly Dowler.

Bellfield is also accused of attempting to kidnap 12-year-old Rachel Cowles the day before Milly went missing.

He appeared on Wednesday at the Old Bailey for a brief hearing via videolink.

Shaven-headed Bellfield, formerly of West Drayton, west London, spoke to confirm his name during the hearing.

The defendant remains in custody and is due to face trial on May 5.

Amanda Dowler, known to her family as Milly, disappeared on March 21 2002 as she walked home from a train station after school.

Her remains were found six months later in woodland in Yateley Heath, Hampshire, some 30 miles away.
