Elderly couple die in road accident

An elderly man and his wife have died following a road collision in Largs

An elderly couple have died after they were hit by a car while crossing a road.

The 87-year-old man died at the scene of the collision in Greenock Road, Largs, North Ayrshire.

His 84-year-old wife was airlifted to the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow, where she later died.

Officers have informed the family.

The couple were struck by a red Toyota which was travelling north on the road. The 34-year-old female driver was not injured but has been taken to Inverclyde Hospital in Greenock as a precaution, police said.

Greenock Road was closed between Nelson Street and Brisbane Road as officers investigated the scene.
