Harry Potter first edition theft: man charged

A 40-year-old man was charged today with stealing a limited first edition Harry Potter book from an art gallery, police said.

The edition of Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone, worth around £6,000, was taken from a display in the Creative Art Gallery in Woodstock, Oxfordshire, on October 30.

But it was handed in to police by a member of the public who found it wrapped in a plastic bag outside a shop in Bury Street, Abingdon, on November 15.

Kevin McGirr, from Oxford Road, Kidlington, was charged with theft and was freed on bail to appear at Banbury Magistrates' Court on January 4.

No further action will be against a 36-year-old woman who also answered bail today. She was arrested on suspicion of theft and aiding an abetting an offence, Thames Valley Police said.

The book's owner, Adrian Greenwood, from Oxford, has said he was happy at the discovery and thanked police for their help.
