Hero Pc writes book on Moat attack

David Rathband, the police officer blinded by gunman Raoul Moat, has written a book about his experiences

The heroic police officer who was blinded by gun maniac Raoul Moat has written a book about the night he nearly died and how he has rebuilt his life.

Traffic cop Pc David Rathband was blasted twice as he sat unarmed in his patrol car on a layby west of Newcastle in July last year, moments after crazed Moat had rung police to declare war on officers.

He survived the shotgun attack by playing dead, then kept his two children in his mind as he waited for the emergency services to arrive.

The 43-year-old, who loved his job, survived but lost sight in both eyes. The book is named Tango 190 - Pc Rathband's police call sign.

Former Newcastle and England captain Alan Shearer said: "In my world the word hero is way over-used. In the real world, it's the absolute minimum requirement for Pc David Rathband."

Moat had already shot his ex-lover Sam Stobbart and killed her new boyfriend Chris Brown 24 hours before he tried to kill Pc Rathband.

He sparked the largest manhunt in British history when he went on the run for a week, before shooting himself in the head in Rothbury, Northumberland. Two accomplices were jailed for life earlier this year and the police officer attended their trial.

A spokesman for the publishers said: "The book, published this coming July to mark the first anniversary of the shootings, is Rathband's personal account of the attack and the events surrounding it, including his attendance at the trials of Moat's henchmen.

"It is also the story of his physical recuperation and the gradual and courageous rebuilding of his life, with the help of his family, in the wake of terrible injuries sustained in the line of duty."

He has vowed to return to work despite his disability, and has set up Pc David Rathband's Blue Lamp Foundation to raise cash for emergency services personnel injured in the line of duty.
