A jealous husband who stabbed his wife to death after she met another man on Facebook has been jailed for life.

Brian Oliver, 40, stabbed his estranged wife Joanne Oliver 15 times in a "brutal act of violence" when she refused to reconcile their relationship, a trial at Manchester Crown Court was told.

Oliver, who had previously denied murder claiming diminished responsibility, dramatically changed his plea to guilty two days into his trial.

He was ordered to serve a minimum of 19 years in jail before he will be considered for release by a parole board.

The trial heard that Oliver, of Duke Street, Radcliffe, left his wife in a pool of blood on a remote path in Heaton Park, Prestwich, near Manchester, on September 24 last year.

He then slashed his own throat and wrists before fleeing the scene and then confessed to what he had done to some passing workmen.

Mrs Oliver, 32, had been with the defendant for 14 years and they had been married for 10 years, living together in Duke Street.

The court heard that in the last couple of years it had "not been a happy marriage" and Mrs Oliver had started to see another man whom she had met on Facebook last summer after the pair had separated and were living apart.

The jury of nine women and three men was told that Mr and Mrs Oliver had a "volatile relationship" and that the defendant would "drink excessively" and on occasion was violent to his wife.

Senior investigating officer Andy Tattersall said: "This was a truly tragic end to what had been a fractious relationship. We might never know exactly what caused Oliver to stab his wife that day. She was struck down in the prime of her life."
