Man in court over actor 'ear bite'

Actor Clive Mantle was allegedly attacked in a Travelodge in Newcastle

A man is due to appear before a judge accused of biting off part of Casualty actor Clive Mantle's ear.

The 55-year-old, who also appeared in the hit US show Game Of Thrones, underwent emergency surgery after he was allegedly attacked in a Travelodge on Newcastle's Quayside last month.

Mantle had been appearing in a touring production of The Ladykillers in the city, and it was believed the incident occurred after he asked other guests to keep the noise down.

The actor, who is more than 6ft 5in, played Greatjon Umber, a northern lord, in the first series of Game Of Thrones. In Casualty he played surgeon Mike Barrett.

Philip McGilvray, 32, from Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, has been charged with wounding with intent and will appear at Newcastle Crown Court.
