A man is in hospital after being stabbed in a shopping centre, police said.

The 41-year-old is in a "serious" condition after he was attacked at Bristol's Cribbs Causeway out-of-town mall, Avon and Somerset Police said.

A force spokesman said: "The incident happened between Marks & Spencer and Waterstones book store just after noon. On arrival police found a 41-year-old man had been assaulted.

"He is believed to have been stabbed in the lower back and was treated at the scene by fire officers who were attending a charity event."

The injured man was taken to the city's Southmead Hospital, with police saying his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

A 46-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and remains in custody, the police spokesman said.

Jon Edwards, commercial director at the centre, said: "Our security team attended to an incident involving two men that was taking place in the mall outside M&S this afternoon.

"The police were immediately summoned and one of the males was taken to hospital.

"The safety of our shoppers is our primary concern and we continue to support the police with their inquiries."
