MasterChef cellist lops off finger

MasterChef contestant and classical cellist Kennedy Leitch after he lopped off the end of the middle finger of his left hand

A MasterChef contestant has diced with disaster and almost put his day job as a professional cellist in jeopardy - after slicing off the top of his finger.

Classical cellist Kennedy Leitch lopped off the end of the middle finger of his left hand - crucial to his career - with a potato peeler.

Medics had to glue the skin back on after his nasty ordeal on the BBC1 show.

He was among 10 contestants still in the competition when he suffered his unkindest cut.

Leitch, 33, and the others were being unleashed on the public for the first time and travelled to Scotland for an outdoor challenge.

They had to prepare lunch for 100 hungry competitors at the Invercharron Highland Games.

Leitch was leading a team of five and under pressure to cook the dishes in time in a tent, when he stepped up to help peel 20kg of neeps and tatties to accompany a venison dish when disaster struck.

Leitch, based in Glasgow but originally from Ayr, is a cellist with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

He said: "It was the middle finger of my left hand, which is the worst hand for a cellist to hurt."
