Commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe has called for police response officers to be routinely armed with Tasers.
A review of the weapon's availability is currently under way after politicians said its wider use could cause “irreparable” damage.
However, Mr Hogan-Howe said on LBC radio that he would sanction greater use of Tasers after four of his officers were stabbed in London over the weekend.
The police chief told a firearms officer who called in to the LBC show: “What we need to make sure is that it's available when it's needed and having it with people such as yourself, a specialist in firearms, is good, because it gives you an alternative to using a gun.”
Tasers “ought to be a vehicle-borne option”, Mr Hogan-Howe added.
