Pensioner struck by stolen car dies
Wednesday, 8 February 2012
The pensioner was getting out of his Vauxhall Frontera after parking it in Moray Avenue, Hayes, on Tuesday evening when he was hit and killed by the VW Golf.
Just minutes before the tragedy officers in a marked police car had abandoned a chase involving the hatchback, which had been reported stolen following a house burglary. The unlawful driver and a passenger made off on foot following the fatal crash and remain at large.
Scotland Yard confirmed the Independent Police Complaints Commission and Directorate of Professional Standards have been informed about the incident.
A force spokesman said police were originally contacted at around 6.53pm on Tuesday by the owner of the Golf who saw it being driven away from his home. He later found the car keys had been taken during a burglary at the property.
Three minutes later, a police patrol car spotted the stolen vehicle in Dawley Road before pursuing it. During the chase, the Golf hit a Vauxhall Zafira at the junction of Botwell Lane and Church Road, before driving on.
The police car also hit the stationary Zafira and was forced to abandon the pursuit at 6.58pm. No one was injured
Detective Sergeant Chris Osborne, from the Met's the Road Death Investigation Unit (RDIU), said: "We are keen to speak to anyone in the area who either saw the Golf being driven prior to the collision or anyone who saw the people responsible running away afterwards."
Anyone who can assist should call the RDIU on 020 8998 5319, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
