A couple who scooped nearly £3.5 million on the National Lottery have revealed they made the life-changing discovery thanks to a new mobile phone.

However, Chris and Sue Bowers, 61 and 60, refused to believe the windfall until the money was officially in their account.

The couple, from Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, are looking forward to a long and relaxed retirement after scooping a £3,497,114 share of the Lotto rollover jackpot on Saturday.

Mrs Bowers retired 10 weeks ago from her admin job, while her husband can now leave his role as a forklift truck engineer three and a half years early. Their first big buy will be a new house where Mr Bowers' father, 92, can move in with them.

Mr Bowers said: "I am a gadget man, I have just got myself a new iPhone. On Saturday night we were sitting there and we put the numbers in to check them, you get little red dots or a green tick and we had a green tick.

"It then went through and said over £6 million with two sharing. I said to Sue, 'I think we've won', but she thought we had made a mistake."

Mrs Bowers added: "It's when the man from Camelot said, 'you're now a multimillionaire', which is quite mind-blowing, to say the least. It was only then that we really said OK, we've won."

The technology-savvy couple said they usually do the lottery online but this time Mr Bowers had picked a random selection of numbers using a conventional ticket.

He said: "There were no emails or anything this time, I just wrote the ticket out and picked some numbers. But it was pretty good on the iPhone. I know I keep going on about my iPhone but this time last month I didn't have one."

The winning ticket was bought at Sainsbury's in Wellingborough and the winning numbers from Saturday's draw were 10, 18, 34, 35, 39 and 48. The bonus number was 6.
