Two die in light aircraft crash

A light aircraft crashed in fields in Leicestershire, killing the two people who were on board

Two people have died after the light aircraft they were flying in crashed into fields in Leicestershire.

The pair, who were the only people on board the aircraft at the time of the accident, were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

The emergency services were called to fields in Fenny Drayton at around 6.45pm on Sunday evening after reports of an "aircraft emergency", Leicestershire Police said.

Inspector Luke Rusell said: "It is not clear at this point where the aircraft had taken off from and where it intended to land.

"It crashed in fields in a rural part of south-west Leicestershire.

"The two people on board were confirmed dead at the scene by an air ambulance paramedic.

"Officers are securing the scene overnight so the specialists from the Air Accidents Investigating Branch can begin a complete investigation in the morning (Monday)."

At the scene of the accident, road closures were in place and a large police cordon surrounded the field where the crash happened. There are few visible signs of the accident in the area.

One man came to lay flowers at the scene. He said he knew the people who died but was too upset to talk about them and did not want to give his name.

The hand-written card on the yellow, white and pink bouquet he left said: "Keep flying in Heaven my friends. We miss you."
