Voyeurism charge man ‘had child porn images on new PC’

A man accused of setting up a camera and computer system to spy into neighbours’ bedrooms is facing new charges of possessing indecent images of children, the High Court has heard.

Prosecutors said one of the suspected photographs was discovered on a new laptop computer Rodney Seffen (38) bought after he was first granted bail.

A second count relates to more than 50 indecent images allegedly discovered during an analysis of computer equipment and discs seized during earlier searches of his home.

Mr Seffen, of Alexander Park, Maghera, Co Londonderry, is already facing charges of voyeurism, recording a person in a private act and operating equipment for the purposes of voyeurism.

He is alleged to have been viewing both a mother and daughter in another house in the area.

The court was previously told police discovered roof slates had been removed or raised to give a view out with a video camera installed near the chimney.

Long cables were used to relay images to a computer monitor in the kitchen while sets of binoculars — one a zoom-style pair — were also discovered, according to the prosecution.

Mr Seffen, a graphic designer who his lawyer said had exhibited throughout Europe, was released on bail in September to live at an address approved by police. However, he was returned to custody earlier this week following the alleged discovery of indecent images.

“The new thing that has come to light is this new laptop which has been looked at by police. Police found one indecent image on it of a child they reckon to be about 14 years of age,” Kate McKay, prosecuting, said.

A defence barrister said Mr Seffen accepted having up to 10,000 images — some nude, others partially clothed or anatomical — solely for professional purposes.

They were the “bread and butter” of his work, the court heard.

The lawyer stressed his client denied downloading the image found on the laptop, an advanced model costing £1,600.
