Warning after sex attack on teenager

Young women have been urged to be vigilant after a teenage girl suffered a serious sexual assault during a late-night attack.

The victim, who is in her late teens, was attacked by an older man in Portadown.

She was assaulted some time between 2.20am and 3.20am last Saturday morning, October 17. However, details have only now been released.

Her attacker is described as a tall, bald man of medium build who is aged in his 30s or 40s, and was wearing dark clothing.

David Jones, an independent councillor in the Portadown area, said it was a reminder for young women to exercise caution.

“Unfortunately in society you have sick people who are prepared to cause such distress and trauma,” he said.

“Nobody wants to hear of this type of despicable attack. People should feel safe in our town.

“I would advise young girls to be aware and take safety precautions when going for a night out.”

Mr Jones said his thoughts were with the victim and urged anyone with information to come forward.

“We may be shocked and dismayed at this attack, but no-one can imagine the turmoil which the victim must be going through,” he added.

Detectives have appealed to anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area to come forward.

They are particularly keen to speak to four men who helped the girl to get a taxi.

Anyone with information should contact police on 0845 600 8000.
