Waterside man is fined £600 for bigamy

A 53-year-old man from the Waterside area of Derry has been fined £600 when he admitted committing bigamy.

Louis Guille, from Mountain View, admitted the offence when he appeared at Derry Magistrate's Court charged with marrying a woman in the city's Guildhall registry office on July 23 2004, while he was still married to another woman.

Defence solicitor George Copeland told District Judge Barney McElholm that Guille first married in Derry in January 1977 but that marriage lasted only one year and he was legally separated in 1979.

“His first wife went back to England. That was over 20 years ago. He tried to get her to consent to a divorce but she refused to sign the divorce papers.

“He should have gone through the process of irretrievable breakdown without her consent on the basis that they were separated for a minimum of five years. He broke the law. He met another woman and they fell in love and foolishly got married before he divorced his first wife”, Mr Copeland said.
