What has Ulster taxpayers' money bought for Assembly offices?

So just what has the Northern Ireland taxpayer been paying for?

The list of items claimed by MLAs under their office-running allowances is long and fairly predictable.

As well as the basics like rent, rates, staff wages and utility bills, it features TVs, furniture, a wheelie bin, Rentokil, mats, re-decoration, cooker installation, website development, kitchen appliances, room hire, stationery, advertising and office signage. The new Assembly disclosure covers the period 2003/04 to 2007/08.

It follows the release last month of the same details for 2008/09.

The older material contains a smaller range of items funded from the public purse. That's presumably because for most of this time, MLAs could only claim a maximum of £48,000 per year in office costs. The total now stands at £72,660.

The material made public overnight by the Assembly again highlights the commonplace Sinn Fein practice of receiving rental expenses for premises owned by the party. President Gerry Adams is among the MLAs who have made such claims over a number of years.

Two of his party colleagues meanwhile paid their rental expenses to a Sinn Fein-linked company called Sevastapol Developments during the period 2003/04 to 2007/08.

It is an absolute disgrace. These people get salaries in the region of three figures - what do I do when I need a new bathroom. l I have to find the money myself that's what!! The whole lot of them should be thrown out of office - what use are they anyway!! They have never ever done anything for me.

Gritty, moving and heroic...Billy plays captured life here

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times ... Sunday's 30th anniversary screening of the seminal Too Late to Talk to Billy was riveting viewing. But it wasn't nostalgic viewing.

Parties need better defence in Stormont's game of two halves

Surprise, surprise. Peter Robinson has been to his first gaelic match, Martin McGuinness is heading for Windsor Park and the Ulster Unionists have scored another own goal.

Why trying to go on a diet is never really a piece of cake

Some people make New Year’s resolutions, I make lists. Every new year I determine to keep track of everything I spend and everything I eat and drink.

Scary movie? Their jaws were sore from laughing

Teenage boys love horror films and I have two who are in charge of the remote control in our house, so naturally there’s gore-a-plenty on the box most weekends. However, until recently one film was banned.
