White Christmas could prove costly for bookies

Bookies are preparing for a costly white Christmas as they cut the odds of festive snow yesterday.

With the cold snap continuing to cause havoc across the UK, thousands of people are betting the wintry weather will remain.

Bookmaker William Hill said it had received an estimated 22,000 bets on a white Christmas.

One customer from Derbyshire could win a record £14,700 payout if it snows on December 25 in Aberdeen, Cardiff and London after he staked £1,700, the firm said.

A spokesman added: “The nationwide gamble on a white Christmas has meant that William Hill has cut the price of snow on Christmas day for nine days in a row”.
