Woman struck 15 times during rape, court told
Thursday, 5 November 2009
A woman was raped and punched up to 15 times during a “vicious” assault in Co Down, the High Court has heard.
She was then pinned against a doorway and kissed by the man who subjected her to the ordeal, prosecutors said.
It was also claimed that the alleged attacker was captured on town centre CCTV cameras in Bangor.
Details emerged as Zakk Dillon (20) applied to be released on High Court bail.
Dillon, with an address at Central Avenue, Bangor, faces charges of rape and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He denies the offences.
The alleged attack was carried out after the woman, in her 20s, had been out socialising in the seaside town on August 28. Crown barrister Jonathan Lowry said she was suddenly dragged up a lane after leaving a house party and walking along Queen's Parade.
Her assailant knocked her to the ground and stood over her momentarily before getting down beside her, the court heard.
Mr Lowry said: “While still lying beside her he struck and punched her approximately 15 times on the upper body and head area in a vicious assault.”
It was alleged that the man then forced her to perform a sex act.
“At the end of the rape the male lifted the lady up to her feet, put her against a doorway, pinned her against a door and kissed her,” Mr Lowry added.
The woman, who later dialled 999 to alert police, suffered head injuries, two black eyes and bruising to her body.
Dillon was subsequently arrested and denied carrying out the attack.
DNA evidence was obtained which showed his profile and that of another person, the court heard. Further checks are being carried out to establish whether the second profile matches that of the victim.
But defence barrister Denis Boyd disputed the strength of police assertions that a figure seen on closed circuit film was his client. “There is no identification of him from CCTV footage,” Mr Boyd insisted.
The lawyer said Dillon had been put out of the Simon Community hostel where he lived in Bangor on the night of the alleged rape because he had been drinking.
He was hanging about outside the premises when police arrived to search him, the court heard.
“He vehemently denies these charges,” Mr Boyd said. Following submissions Mr Justice Treacy adjourned the application until a forensic report on the DNA profiles is produced later this month.
