Woman under arrest after father of two’s knife murder

Police have launched a murder inquiry after south Belfast man Anthony Robin was stabbed to death in his home.

The 44-year-old was attacked at the house in Fitzroy Avenue in the Ormeau area of the city at about 3.30am yesterday.

Mr Robin — who is understood to be a father of two — died later in hospital following the attack.

A police spokesman said he had suffered stab wounds.

A 38-year-old woman arrested yesterday is still being questioned by police.

Mr Robin’s family, who live in another area of south Belfast, were too upset to speak about the incident yesterday. One man passing the murder scene in Fitzroy Avenue said Mr Robin — who was known as Tony — was well thought of in the Lower Ormeau area.

“It is just terrible. He was a really good guy. He was just a gentleman,” he said.

PSNI officers maintained a presence all day outside the house.

Forensic scientists arrived at around 10am yesterday spending hours examining the scene.

People living in the street, which is heavily populated with students, said the death had left them “deeply shocked”.

One woman said: “It is frightening that this can happen only a few doors down from where you live.

“As far as I know the people who lived there just kept themselves to themselves. I hope they catch whoever did this.”

Student Patrick Mullan (21), who lives opposite the murder victim's house, added: “I just heard this morning. I had no idea what had happened. It is really shocking.”

Local councillor Pat McCarthy said: “This is very shocking news. It is a real tragedy for all concerned and my thoughts go out to this man’s family.”

MP for South Belfast Alasdair McDonnell said the murder would cause “distress and concern” for the victim’s family. He added that the incident would also lead to residents worrying about their safety.

Police have appealed for witnesses. They want to speak to anyone who was in the area between the junction of Fitzroy Avenue and Sandhurst Road at around 3am to 4am on Monday to contact them.
