Published 05/03/2009

A 29-year-old man was charged today with the blackmail of a Premier League footballer over an iPod.

It is understood a Manchester City player was asked to pay money for the retrieval of his iPod which was discovered in the changing room of a clothing store.

The unnamed player then contacted police in January and the iPod was later recovered.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "Paul David Smith, 29, of Ellen Street, Heaton Norris, Stockport, has been charged with blackmail and will appear before Manchester City magistrates on March 13."
