Man on eight rape charges granted bail

A North Belfast man accused of repeatedly raping a woman over a three year period was released on bail yesterday.
The 41-year-old suspect is also charged with a series of indecent assaults, threatening to kill and inflicting grievous bodily on the alleged victim.
He cannot be named to protect the identity of the woman he is accused of attacking on dates between February 2004 and July 2007.
As the defendant appeared before Belfast Magistrates’ Court a detective constable claimed he could connect him with the offences. The officer also told the court police believe he may leave Northern Ireland if released.
But after a request was made to have the accused hand in his passport a defence lawyer said his client has never owned one.
The man faces eight charges of rape and six counts of indecent assault.
Releasing him on his own bail of £500, District Judge Fiona Bagnall banned him from contacting the alleged victim and ordered him to report weekly to police.
The man will appear in court again next month.
