Man remanded over murder of soldier in 1992
A 36-year-old man has been remanded in custody for a week charged with murdering a soldier outside a Derby Army recruitment office nearly 20 years ago.
Declan Duffy was not required to enter a plea when he appeared at Birmingham Crown Court via videolink from a prison in the north of England yesterday. Mr Duffy is accused of murdering Sgt Michael Newman on 14 Apri 1992.
Judge William Davis QC ordered Mr Duffy to appear by videolink at Wolverhampton Crown Court next Friday.
There was no application for bail during the proceedings, which lasted for four minutes.
Derbyshire Police announced earlier this week that Mr Duffy had been charged with Sgt Newman's murder, after being brought to England from Northern Ireland.
The prison where Duffy is being held was not identified in court.
