Man who tried to steal car is jailed
A 21-year-old man who tried to steal a car has been jailed for 12 months. Martin Thomas McDonnell from Garnock, Belfast, was handed the sentence when he appeared at Belfast Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
He received four months’ jail for the charge of attempting to take a Honda Civic without the owner’s consent, eight months’ jail for causing damage to the vehicle and one month imprisonment for obstructing a police officer in the execution of his duty.
District Judge Ken Nixon told the court that during an earlier sitting he had heard how car theft was a major problem in the west Belfast area. “This particular community has been plagued by this particular type of behaviour,” said the judge.
