Mayor's son recovering after Afghanistan blast

Published 05/06/2009

The son of former Belfast Lord Mayor Bob Stoker is out of intensive care after he was injured in an explosion in Afghanistan.

Michael Stoker, a Queen's Royal Hussars soldier, was hurt in an explosion in Helmand Province last month.

The 22-year-old's vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device. Two other soldiers were also injured.

Ulster Unionist Cllr Stoker travelled to Birmingham, where his son has undergone surgery in a military hospital.

"My son Michael is now out of critical care, and is sitting up talking to the family. He is obviously still in a lot of pain but the doctors are well pleased with his progress," he said.

"The family would like to thank everybody for their prayers and good wishes.

"This news is terrific for us, for Michael and for all concerned."
