News in brief: Jack-knifed lorry causes traffic chaos
Part of the M3 had to be closed to traffic last night after a vehicle jack-knifed during rush-hour.
The accident caused traffic chaos throughout Belfast. Both country-bound lanes from the Odyssey off slip to Sydenham Bypass were shut down. They were re-opened just after 7.30pm. Meanwhile, the Falls Road in west Belfast was also closed for a short time yesterday following a road traffic collision.
Cigarettes stolen in vehicle hijacking
THIEVES escaped with a substantial quantity of cigarettes after hijacking a delivery lorry in Belfast yesterday. The incident occurred at around 10.30am. A black five-door, Volkswagen Golf drove at high speed to block the path of a delivery vehicle at Haywood Avenue. Four men got out of the vehicle and ordered the driver to stay in his seat. They then took a large quantity of cigarettes from the van.
Object thrown in window was a hoax
POLICE have declared a suspicious object which was thrown through the window of a home in Lurgan yesterday as a hoax. Bomb disposal experts were called to the house in the Banbridge Road area after a neighbour saw an object being thrown through the front dining room of the property. It is understood a brick was thrown through the window first.
Police appeal after petrol station theft
DETECTIVES have appealed for information regarding a break-in at a petrol station in Castlereagh yesterday. Two men broke into the premises on Milltown Road and stole a quantity of cigarettes before fleeing in the direction of Belvoir estate at around 4.20am yesterday.
Warning over false tax refund emails
DETECTIVES are advising the public to be wary of emails offering a tax refund. Letters claiming to be from Revenue and Customs have been sent to individuals asking them to complete a proforma. Anyone affected is asked to contact police on 0845 600 8000.
McAleese to deliver university lecture
IRISH President Mary McAleese will deliver the annual PJ McGrory Human Rights Lecture at St Mary’s University College next week. It will be held on Tuesday, August 4, at 7.30pm.
