A Co Antrim bakery specialising in gluten-free products has closed following action by HMRC.

Sunstart Bakery in Woodside Road Industrial Estate in Ballymena supplied own-brand goods such as wheat-free shortbread to retailers such as Lidl, Tesco and Holland & Barrett.

Now owner Hubert Brown Kerr - the sole director of the business - has gone bankrupt following a creditor's petition.

A spokesman for the Northern Ireland Court Service said an action had been started against Mr Kerr by HMRC in June this year.

It is understood that around 15 staff have lost their jobs - some of whom had worked for the business for 20 years.

Ballymena has already seen a series of major jobs losses, with around 1,500 positions going as two major employers, JTI Gallaher's and Michelin, close their operations in the town.

No one from Sunstart was available for comment, but one employee told Q Radio that staff were owed back-dated wages. "Jobs are very scarce in Ballymena at the minute," they added.
