£40k bill to clean up Newry and Mourne toxic waste
Illegally dumped toxic waste has cost taxpayers in Newry and Mourne more than £40,000 in clean-up costs in the past month.
Meanwhile, some five incidents of toxic waste dumping have taken place in a single day, with 10 intermediate bulk containers abandoned at roadsides across the region on Wednesday.
One of these incidents took place close to Dromintee Community Centre, which is used by a pre-school playgroup.
Newry and Mourne District Council spent over £40,000 to safely dispose of the highly dangerous material, according to the SDLP’s Connaire McGreevy.
