Up to 60 owls were released into the wild after vandals slashed cages at a Co Antrim animal rescue centre.
Staff at World Of Owls in Randalstown put out an urgent appeal for help after discovering the damage yesterday morning and warned that the owls cannot survive on their own.
More than 15 members of the public helped recapture birds and repair aviaries after an appeal was put out on social media.
By the afternoon, many of the birds had been returned but 12 were still missing, including several Indian eagle owls, an American horned owl, an African spotted eagle owl, long-eared and short-eared owls and a barn owl.
Anyone who spots any of the owls should contact police on 0845 600 8000.
