600 compete in world canoe polo event
Hundreds of young people from around the world have competed in the first Junior International Canoe Polo Championships to be staged in Northern Ireland.
More than 600 competitors and their support teams from 18 countries arrived at Knockbracken Reservoir in Carryduff, just outside Belfast, last Wednesday to take part in the five-day event.
The contest, which finished on Sunday, was sponsored by Argento Contemporary Jewellery, the Canoe Association of Northern Ireland, the International Canoe Federation, Ulster Canoe Polo Club and Canoeing Ireland.
Argento chief executive Peter Boyle said: "Argento sponsored each of the teams in this event for €2,000 and the Namibians got €5,000 because they could not afford to do it without that support.
"We wanted to show children from here that being from Northern Ireland is not a reason to lose and they have what it takes to win against international competitors."
Mr Boyle added the event will be back in 2019.
