Anger as Belfast City Hospital's A&E unit faces closure
A public service union has said members have been told the accident and emergency department at Belfast City Hospital will shut at the beginning of October.
Tommy Steenson from Unison said staff from the hospital have been told by health bosses the unit will shut on October 3.
More than 100 union members, staff and patients protested outside the hospital yesterday angry at plans to close the A&E.
Last week Health Minister Edwin Poots said he was considering a proposal to cut the number of A&Es in Belfast from three to two and indicated the City Hospital unit was in the firing line.
He said the changes are necessary as there are not enough consultants working in emergency medicine in the Belfast Health & Social Care Trust to ensure adequate supervision of junior doctors.
However, Mr Steenson said: "We have been told no decision has been made yet but our members are telling us they have been told the A&E will shut on October 3."
