Anger at 'morons' behind Strabane hoax
The people who left an elaborate hoax outside a shop in Strabane which forced 40 residents out of their homes have been described as moronic by the local council chairman.
Army Technical Officers carried out a controlled explosion on the device left outside a shop at Ballycolman Avenue before lunchtime yesterday. The area was sealed off for a time, preventing access to the nearby health centre.
Chairman of Strabane District Council, Brian McMahon, hit out at those responsible.
He said: “If there ever was a moronic act this was it. The placing of this elaborate hoax resulted in a large number of local residents, many of whom are elderly and infirm, being evacuated.
Community worker Andy Gallagher added: “I passed the owner of the shop standing over this device so that no member of the public would be hurt before he found out it was a hoax.”
