Anger over church roof lead theft

A Glengormley parish priest has spoken of his disgust and disappointment at the theft of lead from his church roof.

Fr Daniel Whyte spoke out against the theft that occurred in recent days. Thieves have removed lead from the roof on two separate occasions.

The roof was partially stripped of lead on Saturday, September 17. It was noticed the following Tuesday when water was seeping into the church.

Two days later, on Thursday, September 22, thieves returned and removed a substantial amount of lead from the roof.

Fr Whyte said: “Lead was partially removed from the roof last weekend and on Thursday night the thieves returned and removed a substantial amount of lead from the roof causing water damage to the floor and walls. We have tried to make the church as weatherproof as possible until the loss adjustors arrive.”

This is not the first time the church has been subject to vandalism. Ten years ago it was subject to an arson attack in which the building was gutted.

Fr Whyte said: “I want to appeal to people not just in respect of church buildings but also public buildings, schools and so on.

“People need to be alert to anything suspicious and report it to the police. We need to take ownership of the property around us and be effective in preventing crime.”
